Des Bishop on identity, the Irish language and coming back to Australia

This week, Karen welcomed acclaimed Irish comedian Des Bishop to Glór na nGael – Voice of the Irish on 3ZZZ 92.3FM ahead of his Australian tour later this year.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Des reflects on growing up as an Irish-American, moving to Ireland as a teenager, and how learning the Irish language transformed his sense of identity and belonging. He also shares his thoughts on the Irish diaspora, the resurgence of Irish among younger generations, and why Australia remains one of his favourite places to perform.

Karen and Des also look back at his groundbreaking Live at Vicar Street DVD, which found its way into homes around the world, and the iconic "immersion" routine that became a favourite with Irish audiences both in Ireland and across the diaspora.

The programme also features music chosen by Des, including Damien Dempsey, Kneecap and Cry Before Dawn.
